Industrial Electrics | Fault Finding

There is a heavy reliance of electrically powered machinery and systems in modern industry, so it is essential that maintenance engineers and technicians have a good, basic understanding of electrical theory and regulations as well as the practical skill essential to carry out electrical work safely in a work environment.  In addition, these technicians and engineers need to be able to accurately and effectively diagnose electrical faults and problems so that they can return the system to full operation as quickly and safely as possible.  

This five-day practical course at our Technology Training Centre in Aston, Birmingham introduces delegates to systematic fault finding techniques in electrical systems. 

Course content

During the course the delegates will cover the following subject areas in depth:

  • Safe isolation and isolation procedures 
  • Locking off 
  • Test instruments and readings 
  • Circuit diagrams 
  • Reference and test points 
  • Motor testing (insulation, continuity) 
  • Motor starter control circuits 
  • Practical assembly of an industrial power and control circuits 
  • Basic fault finding

Pre-requisites

Whilst there are no pre-requisites for this course it is expected that delegates will have some mechanical engineering experience and will have worked around basic domestic or industrial electrical systems.

Assessment

Whilst there is no formal assessment on this training course, the delegates will need to demonstrate that they have the underpinning knowledge and the requisite skills to operate safely at all times with electricity.  On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.

Career progression:

This five day course includes some limited classroom work to cover the underpinning electrical theory but mainly adopts a practical approach to enable delegates to gain a working knowledge of electrical control systems and fault diagnosis techniques.  Delegates will cover some theory to enable them to construct control circuits, to fault find and rectify faults in circuitry and components.

By the end of this course the delegates will have developed a good working knowledge of the regulations, the health and safety and approved codes of practice of working with electricity and electrical systems.  They will:

  • Understand how to safely isolate and test electrical circuits
  • Be able to identify circuit layouts, components and describe how they function
  • Be apply fault-finding techniques using appropriate test procedures and instrumentation
  • Be able to apply safe working practices when working with electrical systems
