BS4872 MMA Compliant Welding Course
There are many different skills and techniques within the scope of hot working of metals in the broad skill field of welding. Each one of the many and varied welding techniques calls for some specialised skills and knowledge and this three-day practical, hands-on welding course at our Technology Hub in Aston, Birmingham is designed to give delegates the skills and knowledge they need to produce welded joints using Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding equipment to the BS 4872 standard.

Course content
During the course the delegates will cover the following subject areas.
- Welding specific H&S
- Welding theory and principles
- Interpreting welding drawing symbols
- Identifying weld defects
- Set up of equipment and welding practice
- Weld types – flat straight welds, (left & right), fillets, butt welding and vertical welding
- British Standard 4872 coding test
Pre-requisites
Delegates should be using MMA welding in the workplace and have a basic understanding. They also will need to have achieved the relevant practical skills or appropriate experience to undertake MMA welding tasks competently and safely to the BS 4872 standard.
Assessment
The delegates are required to produce a welding test piece produced which is assessed to BS4872 standard by the instructor. They are also to demonstrate that they can set up and operate the MMA equipment safely. On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance. Performance feedback can be provided to the Customer if required.

Career progression:
This 3 day course has some short classroom sessions to present the underpinning theory of this subject area but is heavily focussed on the practical training in welding techniques.
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to safely set up MMA welding equipment and produce good quality welds, safely, in accordance with best practice and the BS 4872 coding standard. The content of this course may be used to support NVQ programmes.
